What is a scrubber? A scrubber (also known as a spray tower, washing tower) is a purification equipment that uses a liquid, usually water or a specific chemical solution, in contact with a gas to remove contaminants from the gas. Its core working principle is the mass transfer process of gas-liquid phases, which mainly purifies exhaust gas through physical absorption and chemical reactions
Scrubber Core workflowThe typical workflow of a scrubber is a counter-flow contact process with the following steps:Exhaust gas introduction: Exhaust gas containing pollutants enters the tower from the bottom or middle and lower part of the scrubber under the action of the fan and flows upwards.Liquid spraying: The washing solution (such as water, acid or lye) is sprayed down evenly through the spray system at the top of the tower, forming droplets or liquid films.Gas-liquid contact and purification: The upward-flowing exhaust gas and the downward-spraying liquid meet and fully contact in the packing layer in the tower.
The packing layer (e.g., Bauer ring, Lassi ring, etc.) provides a huge specific surface area, which greatly increases the efficiency of gas-liquid contact.
During this process, contaminants are removed in two main ways:Physical absorption: Particulate matter, dust or soluble gases (e.g., ammonia, hydrogen sulfide) in the exhaust gas are wetted, captured and dissolved by the liquid.Chemical reaction: When treating acid mist (such as HCl, SO₂) or alkali mist (such as NH₃), corresponding alkaline or acidic substances are added to the washing solution, and a neutralization reaction occurs, thereby converting harmful gases into harmless salts.
Gas-liquid separation: The purified gas passes through the defogging layer (or gas-water separator) on the top of the tower before being discharged.
This device can effectively intercept and remove tiny droplets entrained in the gas, ensuring that the gas is discharged clean and dry.Liquid circulation: The washing liquid that absorbs the contaminants falls into the circulating tank at the bottom of the tower, is pressurized by the circulating water pump, and is re-transported to the sprinkler system at the top of the tower for recycling.

Common combination applicationsIn practical industrial applications, scrubbers are often used as pretreatment units for exhaust gas treatment. For example, it is often used in combination with activated carbon adsorption towers. The scrubber first removes particulate matter, dust, and some water-soluble substances from the exhaust gas, preventing these impurities from clogging the subsequent activated carbon adsorption layer, thereby ensuring the efficient and stable operation of the entire exhaust gas treatment system.
